About the Leaning Tower of Pisa
The Leaning Tower of Pisa is the freestanding bell tower of the Cathedral of Pisa, located in the Piazza dei Miracoli in Tuscany, Italy. Construction began in 1173 and took nearly 200 years to complete, interrupted repeatedly by wars and engineering challenges. The tower began to lean during construction because of soft ground on one side of its foundation — a flaw that engineers tried to correct at every stage but never fully resolved. The result is the world's most recognisable tilt: roughly 3.97 degrees off vertical today, after stabilisation work in the late 1990s and early 2000s prevented it from toppling over entirely. The tower stands about 56 metres tall on its low side and features eight storeys of Romanesque architecture — a ground floor, six open-air gallery levels with elegant columns and arches, and the bell chamber at the summit. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987 and attracts millions of visitors every year, many of whom pose for that classic photograph pretending to hold it up. This brick model faithfully recreates the tower's cylindrical form, tiered galleries, and unmistakable lean.
